Sales tax on orders in the United States

  • Region: North America
  • Updated

When you buy from Fairphone’s online shop, your tax rate depends on your shipping address. This guide explains how we calculate sales tax for your order.

Taxes on orders within the United States

Sales tax on your Fairphone order is calculated based on your shipping address, taking into account your local state, county, city, and district rates.

Tax exemptions for qualifying organizations

If you are purchasing on behalf of an organization that qualifies for tax exemption—such as a government entity, public school, non-profit, or registered reseller—we are happy to process your order tax-free.

Place your order online and then contact Fairphone’s Customer Support with your proof of state tax-exempt status for the state where the product is being shipped. The organization or individual name on the order must exactly match the state tax-exempt certificate.

Frequently asked questions about taxes on Fairphone orders

Why is there tax on my shipping fees?+

State tax laws dictate whether shipping and handling charges are taxable. If you are shipping to a state that requires sales tax on delivery fees, you will see this calculated as part of your final tax total at checkout.

Can I get a sales tax refund on my phone at the airport?+

The United States does not have a national "VAT refund" system for international visitors. Because sales tax is managed individually by each state (and not the federal government), U.S. Customs and Border Protection cannot refund your sales tax when you depart.
