How repair costs work and how to request a repair

  • Region: North America

If your Fairphone device needs a repair, we are here to help you get it working again. Depending on whether your issue is covered under warranty, your repair will either be free of charge or quoted based on spare parts and labor.

How repair pricing works

Repair coverage and costs depend on the warranty status of your device:

  • In-warranty repairs: If your repair is covered by your warranty, repairs and shipping are completely free of charge.
  • Out-of-warranty repairs: If your device is past its warranty period or has user damage, our Service Center will provide a diagnostic quote based on spare parts, labor, handling, and shipping. All out-of-warranty repairs include a three-month repair warranty covering the specific issue repaired.

Replacing an individual spare part does not extend the overall warranty period of the device.

Your options for an out-of-warranty quote

If our technicians determine that your repair is not covered under warranty, we will send you a quote with three options:

  • Accept and repair: Pay the quoted amount to proceed with the repair.
  • Refuse and return: Pay only for shipping, handling, and diagnostic costs to receive your device back unrepaired.
  • Refuse and recycle: Choose to abandon the device, and we will recycle it for you free of charge.

If you do not respond to a quote or contact Customer Support within 60 days, your device is deemed legally abandoned and will be recycled by our repair partners.

A diagnostic and handling fee is always charged for out-of-warranty repairs, even if you choose not to repair your device or have it returned.

What to know before sending your device

Do not send your device without receiving a valid authorization number or send it directly to our corporate offices. Unsolicited shipments are not insured, corporate offices do not have repair equipment, and unauthorized packages will be returned to sender.

How to submit your device for repair

  1. Troubleshoot in our Repair Request Portal to find potential fixes or to generate a shipping label to send it to our service centre. For complex issues, a support ticket will be created to assist you.
  2. Back up all your personal data and perform a factory reset. Any stored information will be permanently erased during the service process.
  3. Package your device safely and send it to the address given on the shipping label.
  4. Technicians will inspect and diagnose your device. In-warranty repairs are performed immediately; out-of-warranty repairs receive a detailed price quote.
  5. Technicians will perform quality testing, and your device is safely shipped back to you.

Frequently asked questions about repairs

Can you provide a loaner or substitute device during repair?

We do not offer substitute devices. We recommend temporarily borrowing a spare device from friends or family while yours is at our service center.

How is it determined if my repair is in or out of warranty?

Our technicians perform a final diagnosis once they inspect your device. A repair is out of warranty if the warranty period has expired or if the device shows user damage (such as liquid exposure or drops), which voids the manufacturing warranty for the entire device.

Can I claim warranty on a second-hand Fairphone device?

Yes, provided you can fulfill the following conditions:

  • Proof of purchase: Return, repair, and warranty services require an original proof of purchase issued directly by Fairphone Inc. or an authorized reseller. Documentation from second-hand peer-to-peer platforms is not recognized as valid proof of purchase.
  • Timeframe & condition: The original purchase was less than standard warranty with no user damage.
  • Account & name registration: The seller must provide the original proof of purchase along with your name so it can be registered in the system.
  • Device identification: The active warranty must be directly linked to the IMEI number of the original purchase.

Why are minor repairs relatively expensive?

Regardless of the spare part cost, total repair fees reflect specialized labor, technical expertise, and testing processes required to safely open, repair, seal, and quality-check your phone.

Is it cheaper to buy spare parts and fix the device myself?

Yes! Fairphone’s modular architecture is designed so you can replace parts yourself. Buying spare parts directly from our online shop saves labor and shipping fees. You can also connect with a volunteer Fairphone Angel in your area for local help. However, make sure to check your warranty coverage first to see if you’re eligible for a free repair.

We cannot reimburse self-purchased spare parts if you later decide to claim a manufacturing warranty defect. Warranty claims must be diagnosed by our official service center.

Where can I find repair guides?

You can find step-by-step repair guides in our online support section and on our official YouTube channel.

Does Fairphone use new or refurbished spare parts?

Depending on availability, we use both new and refurbished spare parts. Every refurbished component is rigorously tested for 100% functionality before installation.
